Traditionally, a designer or engineer’s creative process relied primarily on plans: hand-drawn diagrams, calculations, schematics and blueprints were the focus of design work long before any prototype could be manufactured. The depth and level of practical considerations in design work could really slow down the creative process, which was particularly bad if you were working to a deadline on commission. Human error was a much greater factor: one small misplaced detail could undo months of work.

However, with the emergence of rapid prototyping technology has come a streamlining of this creative process.
